The Electric Truck: Are Fleets Ready for the Zero Emission Shift?

A wind turbine spinning in the background, symbolizing clean energy powering the future of electric trucks.

Explore the global port crisis, what’s causing severe congestion, and how it’s disrupting supply chains around the world.

Fleets Are Moving Faster Than Expected

Electric trucks are no longer experimental. Sales jumped 35 percent in 2023 compared to the year before, with over 54,000 units sold globally. In the United States, more than 52,000 zero emission trucks were already in use by the end of 2024. These numbers show progress, but progress doesn’t mean readiness.

Most Fleets Are Still Testing the Waters

Only 14 percent of U.S. fleets currently operate electric trucks. However, over 60 percent have at least one EV in use. Adoption is clearly underway. Even so, fewer than 10 percent of fleets have gone beyond small-scale pilots. By 2025, that number is projected to rise to 36 percent, but growth depends on more than buying trucks.

Infrastructure Is the Biggest Barrier

Charging remains a major hurdle. Medium and heavy-duty EVs are being delivered faster than infrastructure is expanding. Many companies face delays from utility upgrades and limited charger availability. Only one in four fleets has a full EV deployment strategy. Without widespread charging access, electric fleets stall before scaling.

Short Routes Make the Most Sense

Most U.S. trucks travel fewer than 100 miles per day. That makes electric trucks ideal for local and regional deliveries. New electric models now offer 110 to 250 miles per charge. For many operations, especially last-mile and urban routes, range anxiety is no longer a valid excuse.

The Bottom Line

The shift to electric trucks is happening, but fleets are not fully prepared. Adoption is rising, but strategy and infrastructure still lag. Without serious investment in charging and planning, the electric truck boom will stall out before it delivers real impact. The opportunity is huge, but so is the gap.
